Stockholm City - Sweden's Striking Capital
The beauty of Stockholm - Sweden's capital city, is apparent all year round. Whether you come here in the wintertime when it is blanketed in snow or during the summer when colorful buildings come to life amidst the myriad of sparkling waterways and blue skies - this really is a city to take your breath away.
One of the major draws of this city is its heavy inclination towards modern design and modern living. For anyone who adores the clean lines of Scandinavian design or for those who are looking to broaden their view on original and unique fashion pieces - Stockholm will not fail to delight you. It is also home to some of the world's best nightlife with clubs boasting top of the range sound-systems. The Swedish don't like to compromise.
Every city will have an old town and in Stockholm it is called Gamla Stan dispersing out from the Royal Palace. You might get the feeling that you are having to squeeze your way through it's compressed cobble-ways, at first overwhelming with the terracotta and vanilla buildings looming above - but don't be deterred easily. If you have a good eye - the maze that is the Gamla Stan is hiding an interesting shopping experience if you just look beyond the souvenir shops.
From the old town, take a stroll south to another island sector - Soedermalm. This is still a far cry from the metropolitan center of Stockholm, instead staying in tune with the more traditional surroundings - old working class spots mixed in with art galleries, bohemian shopping and an unconventional night scene.
The new heart of the Stockholm city - Norrmalm, is where you will be adorned with large scale shopping centers, some of the most prized restaurants Sweden has claim to and a well-spirited park that can be best enjoyed in the warmer months. The Swedish are an interesting race who love a bit of harmless fun and the park is a great spot just to lay back and people-gaze.
What makes this city so striking though is that it is all encompassed by a surrounding archipelago - more than 20,000 rocky islands more commonly known as Skaergard. So much of the city is interlinked by water - it feels at times more like a panoply of villages or towns dispersed over these islands. It's diverse setting does make for great exploration though.
If you are planning to see Stockholm, take it all in for at least a week, staying in one of the many hotels that you can check out and book online. On arrival, you will be pleasantly surprised that the residents are very friendly towards visitors, with good English skills and an easygoing demeanor.
One place that does attract the most of visitors to Stockholm is the island Djurgarden - famed for it's open air museum Skansen. This gives an insight to travelers how the Swedish once lived, with as many as 150 traditionalist assemblages and exhibitions all relating to bygone times.
